notes on the importance of trading

Howdy, all. I was at S.P.A.C.E. this past weekend and it got me thinking about trading at cons, so I wrote a little something about why I think trading is extremely important and everyone should do it. It's kind of long, so I'll just link to it here and you can read it if you like, share your thoughts, etc. I hope all of you are well out there in internet land and getting some work done!

OH MY GOD YESSSSS!!!

This is my favorite post EVER! YES! I could not agree MORE Liz! I think trading is absolutely ESSENTIAL. You don't have to trade your newest or nicest items, but everyone should have SOMETHING they can trade. You will make new friends, encourage new artists ("here, I'll trade you MY first comic, so you can see how I started out"), it leads to more sales later on, etc. etc.

Everything you said in your post was great! Thank you so much for linking to this! EVERYONE should read it and take it to heart!!!

Thanks Alec! I'm glad you appreciated it! My friend MK and I were discussing yesterday that people should start putting signs up at their tables at cons, like for hoboes - a big "T" in a circle for "yes, I trade" and a big "T" in a circle with a line through it (like a no-smoking sign) for "no, I don't trade", so people don't have to go through the embarassment of being rejected when they ask. I think we might try to start this up at MoCCA...

I tabled at my first zine fair in March & definitely felt uncertain about trading etiquette. I wasn't sure what I'd do if someone wanted to trade something awful, but I ended up trading with everyone who requested it, and all was well. I did feel nervous asking people if they'd take trades, so I hope the signs catch on!

i love trading! Cons can get so hectic it's hard to get around to everyone, so we put a sign on our table saying "Trades please!". I've gathered the coolest stuff this way. At the same time I am less forward with going up to others out of fear of that awkward moment, where you can tell they obviously don't want to, but won't say so. So please put up the circle T's. I will come by and trade with you!!! There will be tradin's a plenty at our Cliff face table MOCCA too. As for the money thing, even what little money I make at conventions always gets spent on comics AT the convention. So, trade, buy, it's the same difference to me.

The trading logo posted is great! I'll be printing that out for MoCCA as well.

I'm all for trading. Plus, anyone who brings me a chocolate Nesquik gets free comics.

:)

Great post Liz! I will try to be more trader friendly. A lot of my stuff is the fancy, screen-printed kind that I just can't trade. The print-run is limited as it is. But maybe I'll make xerox versions for trade only? I'll try.

I am way in favor of people making xerox versions of fancy minis. As beautiful as handmade art objects can be, I am still more interested in the comics inside (I'm also a starvin' artist trying to make the most of the ol' comix budget). Power to the people!
